Today Orla and I spent the morning on a mini adventure to get ourselves lost .... and found again in a local maize maze. Now I know the concept of a maze is totally lost on a 18 month old, but we had great fun running around the paths, not caring where we were or how long we took. I let Orla take the lead and followed her sense of direction. She turned out to be a little too good, finding the exit within a few turns of starting, so we took another go and headed back in to try and make the most of our £1 entry fee. Darts Farm maize maze is open annually from mid-July to Sept with entry helping to raise money for a nominated local charity (this year - Exeter Leukaemia Fund). The entry fee includes a clue sheet, so if you get really stuck, help is at hand.
After a lot of giggles and once little legs got tired, we then had a go at picking our own sunflowers. We were equipped with a pair of secateurs from the farm shop, then let loose to pick as many or as few as we wanted. They suggest a 50p per flower donation to Hospiscare once your done, but this is totally at your own discretion. Choosing and getting to the sunflowers turned out to be a maze in itself with the giant flower heads towering over us as we fought our way through the field to get the best looking buds. Sensible footwear was a must as already picked stalks and plant debris littered the ground. Orla wasn't too sure of all this and having weighed up my options not to bring a carrier or pushchair, I had to negotiate carrying an 11kg toddler, back-pack, flowers and picking them - not the best decision I've ever made. If there is one thing motherhood teaches you it's a whole new level of multi-tasking! We managed an armful (before my arms where about to drop off), then went off in search of the play park, by far Orla's fav activity of the day.
Even though we didn't spend hours travelling to reach our destination or pack the entire contents of our house 'just-in-case', I loved having some mummy-daughter time, outside in the sunshine with the bonus of a beautiful bouquet of flowers to take home. Adventure needn't be any more than that .... time well spent together.
Thanks @Dartsfarm
